Edmund Caissie obtained his law degree in 1983 from the Faculty of Law at the University of Victoria, where he received the D.J. Lawson prize for the highest standing in Corporate law. He was called to the bar in 1984 and practiced civil litigation in Vancouver and the lower mainland area of B.C. since his call date.
Edmund has conducted dozens of Supreme Court trials and appeals to the Court of Appeal, hundreds of mediations, and thousands of negotiated settlements for clients. He has conducted numerous complex litigation cases, including orthopaedic, brain injury and wrongful death cases, construction and builders liens claims, employment law, insurance claims and real estate litigation, as well as contract and business law disputes.
He was the Chair of Surrey School Board, serving a three year term as trustee. He also served a three year term as Councillor on the Surrey City Council where he was appointed as the Chair of the Public Safety Committee supervising police, fire and bylaw personnel, as well as Vice-Chair of the Finance Committee.
Edmund has been an annually elected Governor of the Trial Lawyers Association of BC since 2007. He was one of the founding members and past President of the Surrey Bar Association. He has been elected by his peers as representative of the B.C. Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, with positions on various committees, including the Judicial Advisory Committee (2012), Government Relations Committee (2012 & 2014), and the Automobile Insurance Committee (2014). He was also appointed to the Law Society Discipline Committee in 2014.
In 2014, Edmund was elected by his peers as a Bencher (Governor) of the Law Society as the representative of the Westminster County (Surrey, Delta, White Rock, Langley, Abbotsford, New Westminster, Burnaby and Chilliwack). He was also elected to the Practice Standards Committee and the Complainants’ Review Committee.
Aside from his many professional affiliations, Edmund is an ardent supporter of the Surrey Food Bank, the Salvation Army, Doctors without Borders and other charities benefiting the needy in the Lower Mainland and the world. In his free time, Edmund loves to golf and travel, and enjoys fine wine and his wifes gourmet cooking.
